Union County Middle School was unstoppable from start to finish this season, finishing 8-0 and punctuating its dominance with a second win over White County – a 37-0 blowout in last Wednesday’s Mountain League Championship at Mike Colwell Memorial Stadium.
The Panthers, who didn’t allow a touchdown over their final 11 quarters, outscored opponents 277-64 during their 2025 campaign, including 77-0 across two postseason games.
UCMS Head Coach James Avery and quarterback Joe Moses both said after the game that the team had been hungry for a league title since the spring, but Moses added that the season-opening win over White County – the team that eliminated Union from the 2024 playoffs – was the springboard for the Panthers’ perfect season.
“After winning that first game (21-6 at White County), I knew we could have a special season,” Moses said. “(White County) is a tough team, but we showed (during game one) that we could also be a tough team.”
Moses accounted for four touchdowns in the win, connecting with Zaven Burnett through the air on 44- and 59-yard strikes during the first half before adding a pair of rushing scores after halftime. Karson Wester scored from a yard out on the Panthers’ opening drive, then the defense added a safety in the second quarter.
“This is just a great feeling,” Moses said. “We came close to winning the championship two years ago in sixth grade, so it’s a special feeling for me and my teammates to go out with a win this year.”
