The clock is ticking for City of Blairsville residents who wish to run for local office this year, as qualifying for the Nov. 4 Municipal General Election ends at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20.

To make it to the ballot, city residents will need to fill out the appropriate qualifying paperwork and pay a fee. Fees are set by state law at “3% of the total gross salary of the office,” so the qualifying fee for mayor is $1,080, and the fee for each council seat is $162.

Qualifying packets can be picked up now during regular business hours at City Hall, which is where early voting will occur in October and Election Day voting will take place in November. City Hall is located at 62 Blue Ridge Street in Blairsville.

People may submit their candidate paperwork and fee payments at City Hall during the qualifying period of Monday, Aug. 18, through Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

City residents are eligible to qualify for and hold office if they are 21 years or older, a resident for at least a year immediately prior to the election date, a registered and qualified voter in the Municipal Election, and they must continue to reside in the city during the term of office.

Terms of office will begin Jan. 1, 2026, and run through Dec. 31, 2029.

Voting in the municipal election will be open to eligible residents of the city. To cast a ballot on Nov. 4, residents will need to make sure they are registered to vote by Oct. 6. This deadline also applies to any necessary changes of address.
