No Byline
The skies over Blairsville Municipal Airport looked a little brighter the morning of Saturday, Nov. 15, as 16-year-old Blairsville native Sawyer Alexander took to the air for his first solo flight, marking a milestone moment in his young aviation journey.
Sawyer’s family – along with his instructor, Jason Hinson – gathered along the fence line to watch as he climbed into the yellow-and-white Cessna, taxied onto the runway, and lifted off alone for the very first time.
After several smooth takeoffs and landings, Sawyer brought the airplane safely back to the ground, greeted by cheers, applause, and a few proud tears from those who know how hard he has worked for this day.
“It was great,” Sawyer said, grinning from ear to ear. “The moment the wheels left the ground, I realized it was just me and the airplane. It’s something I’ll never forget.”
Sawyer began flight lessons when he was just 14, inspired after his father, Mark, began training. From the start, his determination and skill stood out.
“He’s focused, respectful, and genuinely curious about every part of aviation,” said his instructor, Jason Hinson. “Watching him take off for the first time was a proud moment for all of us.”
His parents, Mark and Kennetha Alexander, said they could hardly believe how calm he was before takeoff. “To see him actually flying a plane by himself is incredible. We couldn’t be prouder,” said his mom.
Following the flight, Jason continued a beloved aviation tradition by cutting the shirttail from Sawyer’s shirt – a symbolic moment celebrating a new pilot “leaving the nest” and taking the controls on their own.
For Sawyer, this is only the beginning. He plans to continue his training and work toward earning his private pilot certificate. But for now, he’s still smiling about that Saturday’s flight.
Sawyer would like to thank his instructor, Jason, for his time and steady guidance, and his parents for supporting him every step of the way.
