Union County softball bounced back with two region wins last week, taking down Murray County and LaFayette to improve to 3-1 in 7-AAA and move into sole possession of third place ahead of Tuesday’s trip to first-place Sonoraville.
After visiting the defending state champs, the Lady Panthers (6-6) return home Thursday to meet an improved Ringgold squad, which is currently tied for fourth in the region standings. Both games begin at 5:30 p.m.

Lady Panthers 5, Murray County 0 – Senior Izzy Anthros delivered one of the best all-around performances in program history in Chatsworth last Tuesday, belting two home runs during a 3-for-3, three-RBI performance at the plate. She also fired a complete-game three-hitter in the circle with a season-high 13 strikeouts and no walks.
She opened the game with a double and came around on Stella Collins’ double to give Union County an early lead. Anthros homered to center in the third before the Lady Panthers eventually piled on with three in the sixth.
Marlee Cisneros kicked off the late onslaught with a one-out walk, followed by a bunt single from Brie-Ann Poe. A sacrifice fly from senior Ella Akins brought home Cisneros before Anthros followed with a two-run bomb.
Anthros struck out the side in the sixth and worked around a leadoff single in the seventh to close out her sixth win of the year.
Union finished with 11 hits on the day, including a 3-for-3 performance from Addison Whitener. Collins ended the day 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles, while senior Jules Dyer and Ava Stover added base hits in the victory. Dyer and Poe stole a base.
Lady Panthers 5, LaFayette 1 – Union County delivered another 11-hit performance while swiping five bags in last Thursday’s region win.
The 6-9 spots in the order accounted for eight of Union’s hits, with Stover, Cisneros, Poe and Akins recording two each. Anthros struck out seven in another complete-game performance, allowing six hits and two walks. At the plate, she doubled twice, took a pair of walks and drove in a run.
After stranding two in scoring position in the first, the Lady Panthers scored twice in the second when Cisneros reached on an infield single and Akins and Anthros followed with consecutive two-out doubles.
In the fourth, Whitener doubled in a run after Poe led off with a base hit and Anthros walked with one away. Later in the inning, freshman courtesy runner Arlee Davis stole home to mount a 4-0 lead.
Cisneros tripled in the fifth and came home on Poe’s infield hit.
The Colts got on the board in the seventh via three straight one-out singles.
Whitener also walked during a 1-for-3 day. Stover and Cisneros each finished 2 for 4, while Poe and Akins went 2 for 3 with one RBI apiece.
Makaylin Bingham had two steals; Cisneros, Davis and Whitener added one each.
Lumpkin County 10, Lady Panthers 2 (5 innings) – Union began the week with a Monday trip to Dahlonega, allowing runs in all five innings, including a six-run third.
Anthros and Whitener each homered in the fourth, accounting for their team’s two hits on the day. Lexi Davenport also worked a one-out walk in the fourth inning.
Collins and Davenport saw action in the circle, combining to give up five hits, walk seven and hit four batters, while their defense committed three errors behind them.
