HIAWASSEE – Happy 100th Birthday to Dorothy Juanita Drake-Dye-Denton!
On Sept. 27, 1926, Dorothy Drake was born to Herman & Maude (Eller) Drake. She was raised in the Union and Towns county area along with her brothers W.T. Drake and Bobby Drake, and sister Eva Mae Drake Pennington.

Dorothy married Ray Dye of Clay County, North Carolina, on April 2, 1944, in Hiawassee. They have three sons, Gary (& Linda) Dye, Cecil (& Susan) Dye and Anthony (& Phoebe) Dye.
She was an excellent seamstress and spent her working years at the dress plant in Hiawassee alongside many of the other local women.
Dorothy always planted a large vegetable garden and loved growing huge hydrangeas, rhododendrons and roses in her meticulously cared-for yard. She loved to pressure can the vegetables she grew and kept a freezer full of frozen fruits that they ate from all year long.
When she had time, Dorothy loved to quilt on the quilt frame that took up her whole living room. She couldn’t go a day without eating her favorite fresh tomatoes and bananas along with at least one Nutty Buddy bar or Oatmeal Creme Pie a day.
Dorothy loved visitin’ friends, cooking, baking and taking her daily walks.
Her husband, Preacher Ray, passed away in 1976. She then married E.C. Denton of Hiawassee in 1978, and they spent their retirement years together.
She lived independently by herself after E.C. passed away in 2008, until she was 96 years old. She has since been a resident of Chatuge Regional Nursing Home.
Dorothy has seen all the major changes to Towns County and the world in the last 100 years. She has seen all the changes in modern conveniences and was blessed to have and use them!
She has been blessed with seven Grandchildren, 16 Great-Grandchildren and one Great-Great-Granddaughter.
We, her family, celebrate this huge milestone of a 100th Birthday with her, that few ever get to see. We celebrate her still being with us and planning on more!
