With love, gratitude, and pride, the family honors the remarkable life and enduring legacy of Capt. Dallas Cecil Jones of Blairsville, Georgia, formerly of Vero Beach, Florida, as they mourn his End of Watch. On September 10, 2026, at the age of 95, he awakened to his new forever home.
Dallas was born January 22, 1931, in Titusville, Florida, to Tessie Mae and Stanley Jones and was named for the doctor who delivered him. His family later moved to Selerno, Sebastian, and then Vero Beach. A 1951 graduate of Vero Beach High School, Dallas enlisted in the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Toledo in the Pacific during the Korean War.
While home on leave in 1953, Dallas met Janie Lou Spear. After only a few days together, a handful of letters—and a winning poker hand that gave him the means to send for her—Dallas asked Janie to join him in California and become his bride. They married in Long Beach on May 21, 1954, beginning a love story that lasted sixty-four years on earth.
After his honorable discharge, Dallas returned to Vero Beach and continued his life of service as a firefighter, becoming known throughout the community as Capt. Jones. He mentored generations of younger firefighters and, a diver since his youth, pioneered the department’s Underwater Search, Rescue, and Recovery efforts, helping establish a specialized response that would serve the community for years to come.
After retiring in 1981, Dallas moved to Blairsville, where he continued giving back by becoming the Union County Fire Department’s first credentialed fire instructor.
Dallas loved being a grandfather. He filled his grandchildren’s lives with stories, cards, chess, hard work, and lessons learned alongside him—splitting wood, building a barn, mowing, and repairing small engines.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janie Lou Spear Jones, and their daughter, Deborah Jean Jones.
Dallas is survived by his sister, Mary “Tootsie” Engle of Vero Beach; children Dallas Reece Jones and Patricia of Daytona Beach, Florida; Karan Jones Davenport and Eric Irish of Adairsville, Georgia; and Lois Jones Rich and Jerry of Blairsville, Georgia; grandchildren Melissa Earl Teems, Timothy Grant Earl, Chad Donovan Venables, Jessica LeAnne Jones, Dallas Trevor Jones, and Elizabeth Kelly Jones-Szychowski; 19 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
Dallas leaves behind a legacy of service, devotion to family, hard work, and a life lived with purpose. Though his End of Watch has come, his legacy carries on.
The family will receive guests Tuesday, September 15, 2026, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home in Blairsville. Services will be held in the funeral home chapel Wednesday, September 16, at 11:00 a.m. followed by a graveside service at House of Prayer Cemetery with full military honors.
