Several local events will bring Christmas cheer to the community this Saturday. Kids and families can enjoy the annual Holly Jolly Christmas and Breakfast With Santa before heading to the Union County Farmers Market to browse the Kris Kringle Market and get some holiday shopping done.
Running from 8-11 a.m. at 129 Union County Recreation Rd., the Blairsville-Union County Chamber of Commerce and United Community Bank’s Holly Jolly Christmas will start with a complimentary Chick-fil-A breakfast complete with hot chocolate, orange juice, milk and water.
Of course, Santa will be present for his namesake event, although parents are encouraged to bring their own cameras to capture the magic. Reindeer games and a variety of crafts will be available to take part in while kids wait their turn to sit on Santa’s lap.
And just to make sure he doesn’t forget, little elves can pen their wish lists – or ask their most interesting questions about the North Pole – as part of the Blairsville Post Office’s Letters to Santa station. Parents and guardians rejoice, as Santa always writes back.
Meanwhile, Union County Public Library will provide Christmas book readings in the Butternut Greek Golf Pro Shop throughout the morning, and The Brasstown Ringers and Unity Church of the Mountains will perform Christmas carols in the lobby.
Children can wrap up their visit to a veritable winter wonderland by venturing outside to enjoy a ride on the Mayor’s Train around the Union County Community Center parking lot.
“We are delighted to put on such a fun-filled family event year after year,” said Chamber Event Coordinator Rachel Post.
Down at the Union County Farmers Market, the Kris Kringle Market will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 6, allowing folks to get a little Christmas shopping in. With more than 100 vendors on tap, Market Manager Dustin “The Rog” Rogers said that the goods are largely homemade.
Christmas-themed items like ornaments and wreaths are usually available at the market, but some items like kitchen utensils, clothing and soap are useful year-round. While not a guarantee, some creators also may sell great gifts for children, like crocheted plushes or doll furniture.
Speaking of kids, they don’t have to be dropped off at home after the Holly Jolly Christmas. The Santa Train will return to the Kris Kringle Market this year alongside other children’s activities to keep the little ones occupied while parents go shopping.
There will also be entertainment; the Woody Gap Band of Steel is slated to bring the warmth of the Caribbean to heat up the cold winter the mountains are known for.
“Come see our great vendors one last time,” Rogers encouraged, asking everyone to support small businesses by shopping local during the final Farmers Market outing until next June.
