The Christmas season is now in full swing, meaning families will once again receive the opportunity to attend the tried-and-true tradition of the Union County Historical Society’s Christmas on the Square. This year’s offerings are set for Saturday, Dec. 6.
From 2-4:30 p.m., the upstairs portion of the Historic Union County Courthouse will be transformed into a winter wonderland where kiddos can get their pictures taken with Santa. Parents are encouraged to bring their own cameras, as there will be no professional photographer.
On the courthouse lawn, a professional face painter will offer her art for free to provide some decorative, festive cheer, and members of the Historical Society will hand out glow bracelets in anticipation of the parade, which switched to a nighttime affair in 2017.
The fun will really start after nightfall, when the tree out front will be lit at approximately 6 p.m. This, too, will herald the beginning of the annual Christmas Parade through Downtown Blairsville, which announcer Libby Stevens said will line up at its usual starting spot on School Street.
For 2025, the theme is “Mistletoe and Magic,” and anyone can take part so long as their vehicle – or, for those really looking to impress, float – is lighted.
Registration is not required to participate in the parade, and interested parties can simply join the lineup that evening. From there, they can write their name and who they represent on an index card, which will be given to Stevens to read off during the parade.
Local churches, businesses, nonprofits, civic and volunteer groups can always be counted on to join in the fun and wish “Merry Christmas” to all the spectators who line the streets around the Old Courthouse, so be sure to bundle up and make your way down to the square Saturday night.
Historical Society President Mike Cook said plans are already in place for next year’s celebrations. He hopes to work with local nonprofits to organize a “ticketed event” where kids can come in and enjoy some holiday-themed arts and crafts.
“You can build a birdhouse for mom,” Cook said as an example. “We’re going to try to strive to make it bigger and better each year.”
