Union County High School students had a blast at prom Saturday night, taking place at The Barn in Young Harris. Whether that meant dancing the evening away or just hanging out by the firepit, there was something there for all.
Everyone enjoyed DJ Thiago’s tunes inside the barn itself, with plenty starting to dance early that evening. Cheers and singing echoed from the dance floor, and one student was even lifted up by his peers and briefly enjoyed a little crowd surfing.

Others sought a bit of quiet on the patio, grabbing snacks and sitting down with friends and sweethearts to socialize before heading to the shed to play cornhole. As noted above, the firepit was another option, especially appreciated by those who started to feel a bit chilly from the rain.
Chill and Fill’s food truck continued its tradition of providing seniors with free shaved ice, although others were spotted enjoying the sweet treat just outside the entrance.
At 9 p.m., it was time to herald the crowning of 2026 Prom King and Queen. This year, the coveted titles went to seniors Vince Marevka and Avery Frechette, who attributed victory to their friends and were deeply grateful for having been crowned royalty by selection of their peers.
“It’s a very cool thing,” Marevka said, with Frechette agreeing that it was “very exciting, for sure” before the couple headed off to dance some more.
They made the perfect royal pairing that night, as Frechette and Marevka’s relationship has been going strong for three years now, rooted in their becoming best friends in eighth grade.
After high school graduation in May, Marevka hopes to become a fireman, and Frechette will be attending Western Carolina University, where she will participate on the cheer team and pursue becoming a nurse practitioner.
By 10 p.m., many guests had already left, but those who stayed sang along to their senior song: Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Tuesday’s Gone.” As the evening’s events came to a close, the students were wished well by their teachers before hitching rides on golf carts back to their cars.
