Support was the name of the game for the First Responders Picnic held Sept. 24 at the Union County Farmers Market, though organizers served up plenty of laughs, general good vibes and delicious grub, too.

The event was well-attended by local heroes, continuing the tradition of giving back to those who put so much on the line for the wellbeing of their community.

Organized by American Legion Ira Weaver Post 121, Past Cmdr. Dan Wickersham revealed that the picnic has been recurring each September for at least six years now.

“We put it kind of mid-afternoon so we can catch the shifts,” Wickersham said. “They transition around 5-o’-clock, so we can get those leaving and those coming on shift.

“We really appreciate our first responders. I don’t think we give them credit often enough for everything they do and the sacrifices they make for us.”

Wickersham went on to note the similarities between veterans and first responders and compared them to “brothers and sisters” in terms of stepping up for others. Needless to say, both military and public safety come with hardships, and the potential for trauma is high. That just means there’s a greater obligation to strengthen bonds.

“I don’t mean to be corny, but it’s something bigger than yourself,” Wickersham described of the oaths that service members and public defenders take.

Typical attendance is around 60 to 70 people, but throughout the five-hour spread, this year’s crowd could have easily accounted for a higher number. Often, they trickled in as parts of groups, with friends and coworkers sitting down for a meal together.

American Legion Riders Post 121 Director Glen Cousins grilled up hotdogs and hamburgers, giving the summer favorites a “Glen Stamp of Approval” for quality. Guests could choose from sides like potato salad, pasta salad, coleslaw, a variety of chips and even desserts.

Meanwhile, Patti Cousins warmly greeted diners as they arrived and ushered them under the shed to fill a plate and find a seat.

“We really appreciate the Legion putting this on for us,” said Officer Kelly Ashcraft, who attended last year and praises the opportunity to sit down and enjoy great food and greater company. He promised to return next given the opportunity. “We appreciate anytime they do it.”

Along with firefighters, EMS, law enforcement, 911 dispatch and other first responders, fellow veterans and Legion representatives were in attendance, including Post 121 Cmdrs. Mike and Kathy Merritt and Auxiliary President Nancy Kunz.

Also in the lineup of familiar faces were members of local governance like Commissioner Harold Collins and County Manager Tony Hughes, who shared the general sentiment that the picnic was a wonderful idea and a stellar show of camaraderie.

“I absolutely will be (returning next year), no doubt,” promised Hughes, a first-time attendee. “They give everything to help our community,” he added, admiring the Legion for showing their appreciation for those who remain on the front lines in keeping Union County safe.
